Lithology Laboratory

Prerequisite: ENG34 3109 Lithology or study concurrently

Rock-forming minerals identification of igneous rock, Minerals of sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks by using hand lens and polarizing microscope. Identification of Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks using hand lens and polarizing microscope. Thin sectioning, rock nomenclature, and rock description in the field.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify rock-forming minerals of igneous rocks using hand lens and polarizing microscope.
2. Identify minerals of sedimentary rocks and sedimentary rocks using hand lens and polarizing microscope.
3. Identify minerals of metamorphic rocks and metamorphic rocks using hand lens and polarizing microscope.
4. Assign the rock name from the polarizing microscope.
5. Describe the rock in the field.
